Memories exist in the mind, and the memories we cherish determine who we are.  Our perception of our past influences our perception of our present and future, so it is important to know which memories are most prevalent in our minds.  We create our own identities through our views of ourselves and our world; our identities exist only in the mind, and as such our memories make up a great part of who we are.
