The model in this photograph represents the chaos young men and women put themselves through to try to appeal to the always shifting ideals of perfection. The composition of the photo, being in black and white, represents the lack of color and diversity to the spectrum of beauty in our everyday culture. The media has built an elaborate illusion of what is beautiful and what is “perfection,” and even then there are still flaws to some. The model’s unkempt hair shows the stresses pertaining to young people everywhere as they put themselves through so much anxiety and work to try to attain this standard that many people can only achieve through Photoshop. Yes, even Victoria’s Secret models are photoshopped. These “beautiful people” are mere illusions to us, mirages. They are like sirens calling us off into the abyss in search of this elusive beauty, meanwhile we can find something even more precious within ourselves and our unique nature.
The author is Nicole Rieko Karrmann, an aspiring actress and mediocre potato, born in Newport, California but raised in Dallas, Texas. She loves to read and get lost in fantasy worlds (as well as get far too attached to fictional characters…). But she also loves the experience of getting whisked away in other worlds through movies, television,… basically just escaping reality. She is passionate about her cat, Maui, and her best friend and sister, Taylor. If all goes well, Nicole plans to be an actress and adopt many kittens.
