In this picture, my grandmother and grandfather stand, holding an image of the day they got married. They have always lived a fairly tame life that may seem ordinary to the average observer, but when you look from my view, you see so much more than that. My grandmother, native to Okinawa, Japan, moved to Hawaii to study when she was younger- where she met my grandfather who worked in the military as a mechanic. After the two of them married, they had a daughter- my mother. They worked tirelessly at their jobs to ensure a safe and promising future to their child who, in turn, graduated and studied at the University of Michigan and, later, completed a masters at USC. Because of the ground work that these two individuals did to help my mom succeed, I too am blessed to have inherited the perseverance and tenacity with which to chase my dreams and make change in the world. My grandparents were revolutionaries and they didn’t even know it, changing the future with all their hard work and passion.

The author is Nicole Rieko Karrmann, an aspiring actress and mediocre potato, born in Newport, California but raised in Dallas, Texas. She loves to read and get lost in fantasy worlds (as well as get far too attached to fictional characters…). But she also loves the experience of getting whisked away in other worlds through movies, television,… basically just escaping reality. She is passionate about her cat, Maui, and the under appreciated and mysterious cuttlefish. If all goes well, Nicole plans to be an actress and adopt many kittens.
