Part of identity is looking back at the past versions of ourselves. When we become someone new, the version of us that existed before dies in a way. “An unexpected reunion” explores the death of childhood through reminiscing about an older version of yourself, one you have since shed. The poem explores the complexities of identity by framing growing up as a death of the child you used to be.
