How we perceive and react to fictional characters can say a lot about our implicit biases surrounding others’ identities. This video essay examines fan and academic reaction to Sansa Stark, and how that reaction is shaped by a preference for female characters whose arcs fall within traditionally male narratives. It argues that perhaps it is not more traditionally female characters who must change in order to be heroic, but we must change our perceptions in order to recognize them as heroic.
