AUTHOR COMMENTARY:

This essay discusses how the mind copes with facing difference in the modern world. Specifically, it discusses the presence of the “veil” (anything from a full burqa to a hijab) in the Western world and in the Western mind. This process is actually the healing of entropy. When the mind is faced with schema incongruity (the unravelling of cohesion and our understanding of experiential life), it grasps at any and all measures to reestablish order, cohesion, and regulation. This paper investigates the psychological mechanisms and motivations in that process of reevaluation.
