This piece deals with the illusion that there is a choice when it comes to death or that death can somehow be escaped. One of the reasons the narrator chose not to live again was because she felt that during life death was her constant companion, and it is a fact that all lives must end at some point. If she had chosen to live again, she would have eventually been returned to the same place she had left. Death is always the final destination, even if we can fight it off for a time.
